On the afternoon of June 8, 1944, 2nd Lt. James Frederick Scott departed Station 356 Debden, Essex, UK in his P-51B Mustang (#43-7150) with the 4th Fighter Group, 334th Fighter Squadron, 8th Air Force. His squadron was tasked with striking German railways in the Sarthe region of France, a critical mission aimed at halting enemy reinforcements bound for Normandy.
At 14:30, while making an attack run on a bridge near Rue de la Jatterie, Connerré, approximately 22 km northeast of Le Mans, Scotts Mustang collided with another P-51 (#42-106823) piloted by Lt. Eacott G. Allen. The collision was fatal for Scott, whose aircraft lost its tail and crashed, killing him instantly. Allens Mustang also went down, but he managed to bail out and parachute safely near Connerré, where the French Resistance sheltered him and led him into the Comet Line escape network. After spending several weeks with the maquis at Fréteval, he made his way back to England on August 16, 1944.
