Details:
On the north side of the cemetery close to the outer wall.
CenotaphA large beautiful statue about 8 feet tall of the "Falling Icarus" carved into a pink stone set on a marble block with an inscription and photo of Cpl Zebersky. A local group donated the money for this memorial and it was constructed during the war.
Corporal Martin Zebersky was a crewman, a Gunner, on B-24 42-51692 (Captain Henry J. Kreiensieck crew) of the 759th Bomber Squadron, 459th Bomber Group. On August 22, 1944, Zebersky's plane was on a mission to the Blechhammer Oil Refinery (in what is now Blachownia lska, Poland). The plane was damaged during the mission and crashed at this location; Corporal Zebersky was killed and the rest of the crew was able to successfully parachute from the aircraft. They were all taken as POWs. Corporal Zebersky was buried here after the crash and the memorial soon placed at his grave. Per sources, during the war, this memorial became an object of interest with locals visiting; the enemy moved the body of Zebersky to another location. At the end of the war he was reinterred here. He was repatriated to and in his home of New York in 1948
A nearby memorial marks the location where Corporal Zebersky's plane crashed nearby in Nové Dvory. . See site Novy Dvory-Becva River, Cpl Martin Zebersky, B-24 (42-51692) Crash Marker.
Several other memorials remember other aircraft shot down during this mission:
Another B-24 from this squadron was shot down and crashed in the Bacárna woods near Korytná and is remembered with a memorial. See Site Korytna-Bacarna, B-24 (42-50403) Crash Memorial.
A P-51 escorting the mission flown by 1LT James Hoffman was also shot down. A memorial to him is located nearby in Vezky. See site Vezky, 1LT James Hoffman, P-51 (44-13431 ) Crash Memorial -52nd Fighter Group.
