The US 3rd Infantry Division liberated Berchtesgaden on 4 May 1945, receiving the town's surrender on the Schlossplatz.  The Division conducted a flag raising ceremony here on the Obersalzberg on 5 May.  Thus began 50 years of US Army presence in Berchtesgaden, years of peace and friendship which still resonate across the Atlantic.

Am 4. Mai 1945 befreite die 3. US Infanteriedivision Berchtesgaden von der Herrschaft des NS-Regimes.  Die Ubergabe des Orts erfolge auf dem Schlossplatz. Am 5. Mai hisste die selbe Division hier auf dem Obersalzberg die US-Flagge.  50 Jahre lang verblieben US-Streitkrafte in Berchtesgaden. Die Erinnerun an diese Jahre der Freundschaft und des Friedens besteht noch heuts
