5th Infantry Division Stele of Brandeville

<< Back to Brandeville

Details:

This monument is located on the opposite side of a small irrigation ditch from the D110 highway. As mentioned in the site description, it is on a slightly elevated surface.  Marker This white concrete pillar features two plaques that describe the advance of the 5th U.S. Infantry Division and the importance of the town of Brandeville in the unit's advance. Additionally, the monument features the 5th Infantry Division's Red Diamond insignia. A large representation of this faces the highway and is easily visible to oncoming traffic from the south. The plaques are located on the two sides to the left and right of that which features the large diamond.

Brandeville and the surrounding woods served as important strategic points of defense for the German army. Although progress was initially difficult in and around Brandeville, however,  its capture (and perhaps more importantly the capture of the surrounding hills) was a crucial step in the American advance. Although Brandevill was one of the last towns to be captured before the war ended, it continued to serve as an important post to evacuate wounded soldiers. Brandeville was captured after Mouzay yet before Forêt de Woëvre.
