5th Infantry Division Stele of Jametz (North)

<< Back to Jametz (North)

Details:

The monument is located immediately behind the red bush and road sign mentioned in the sight description. As another point of reference, the monument is located diagonally opposite the road from a metal and wood crucifix that rests on the east side of the road. Marker This white concrete pillar features two representations of the 5th Infantry Division's Red Diamond insignia. The larger diamond faces the west in the direction of D69. The smaller diamond faces south and is visible to oncoming traffic from the center of town. The plaque which originally bore the description of the 5th Infantry Division's advance through Jametz is now missing.

Jametz was captured after Brandeville and before Rémoiville. During the capture of Jametz, troops from the 5th Infantry Division were forced to wade through Le Loison, a creek that parallels the D905 highway. Despite facing enemy fire and dropping temperatures, the troops of the 10th Brigade managed to liberate 85 civilians on November 9, 1918.
