5th Infantry Division Stele of Rémoiville

Details:

The monument is slightly elevate above the road and has shrubs positioned in front of it and to its left and right. It is diagonally opposite from a metal cross with a stone base as well as a smalltombstone. Marker This white concrete pillar rests on a concrete base and bears two representations of the 5th Infantry Division's Red Diamond logo as well as two plaques (one in French and the other in English) that describe the advance of the 5th Infantry Division. The plaques and smaller diamond (situated above the plaques) face south east and are visible from the intersection of Rue de Montmédy and Rue de Quincy. The large diamond is visible from the southwest along Rue de Montmédy. The monument also features two small American and French flags. 


This monument has recently been refurbished and repainted thanks to the support of Le Souvenir Français and its partners.

Rémoiville was captured after Jametz and before Louppy. The town is actually mentioned in the 5th Infantry Division's "Red Diamond" fight song. 

Monument Text:

"Remoiville et Louppy furent capturés par le 11e  régiment d'infanterie, 
commandé par le colonel R.H. PECK, 10e brigade, 5e U.S. division.
Ce point marque la ligne extrême atteinte par l'armée américaine au moment de l'armistice, 
le 11 novembre 1919, à 11 heures."

English Translation:

"Remoiville and Louppy were captured by the 11th Infantry Regiment,
commanded by Colonel R.H. Peck, 10th Brigade, 5th U.S. Division.
This point marks the furthest line reached by the American Army
at the moment of the armistice, November 11, 1918, at 11 hours."
