11th Armored Division Plaque
Details:
This plaque is located in the top half of the memorial at the Houffalize town square site. It is the third plaque from the bottom. Plaque This bronze plaque has a dark background and gold colored perimeter and lettering. The plaque features the insignia of the 11th Armored Division on the left hand side. The plaque's English inscription commemorates the sacrifice of the soldiers of the 11th AD who gave their lives for the liberation of Houffalize on January 16, 1945.
The 11th Armored Division was part of VIII Corps of the First U.S. Army, although at the time of the advance toward Houffalize it served as part of the Third Army and therefore drove north from Bastogne toward the town. The 11th AD was under pressure to reach Houffalize and establish contact with the 2nd Armored Division. The 11th Armored Division persisted in the face of heavy losses and completed the link-up on January 16, 1945.
