1st and 3rd Army Plaque

<< Back to Houffalize Town Square

Details:

This plaque is located on the bottom half of the tall field stone that hosts the plaques at the Houffalize town square site; it is the second plaque from the bottom.  Plaque This light gray stone plaque is mounted on a similarly colored field stone. The plaque features representations of the American (top left) and Belgian flags (top right). The plaque's French inscription commemorates the actions of the 1st and 3rd U.S. Armies and their associated units during combat in and around Houffalize during the Battle of the Bulge. On January 17, 1945, the 1st Army, coming from the north, and 3rd Army, coming from the south, linked up in Houffalize. Although the American forces faced snow and heavy German armored resistance, the hard-fought rendez-vous in Houffalize eliminated the German salient and allowed the Allies to begin a real eastward push toward Germany.
