Major Bennett Plaque (44th Infantry Divsion)
Details:
On the stone retaining wall at the south end of the square, in the middle of the staircase. Plaque A rose granite plaque set into the stone wall honors Major Robert Henderson Bennett, for whom the square is named. Major Bennett was a member of the 7th US Army Civil Affairs unit attached to the 44th Infantry Division and was killed in April 1945. Bennett is remember as the US soldier who saved the city in the winter of 1944-45.
