The marker is a white etched marble plaque attached to the front of a boulder about 5 feet tall. The text is written in Italian (above) and English (below).
The boulder marks the location of the command post of the 504thParachute Infantry Regiment and Combat team in Venafro. The marker also commemorates the 504thinvolvement in the fighting on Mount Sammucro (also known as Monte Sambucaro- 1205 meter peak) along with the 36thInfantry Division during the assault on the Bernard Line and the Battle of San Pietro in December 1944. The peak of Mount Sammucro was key terrain, which dominated San Pietro Infine and was vital to hold in in the Fifth Army attack to move through San Pietro up to the Gustav line.
