<< Back to Caspoli (Mignano M.L.) 7th Infantry Marker

Details:

The plaque is attached to a wall along the road outside the ruins of a church.

Plaque

A small white metal plaque describing the battle that took place in the heights about this location.

The location was the site of an aid station and a field morgue in November 1943.

This plaque is part of a series of plaques the local Chapter of the 3rdInfantry Division Association (Post #16, Floyd Lindstrom) placed to honor the actions of the division in the local area.

In early November 1943, the 7thInfantry Regiment, “The Cottonbalers” of the 3rd Infantry Division was given the mission to take Monte La Defensa (also noted as Difensa) – the heights located above the plaque.  In this difficult, yet unsuccessful attack, Private First Class Floyd K. Lindstrom won the Medal of Honor on the peaks above this site on November 11, 1943.

Monument Text:

The text is writtenin Italian on top and in English below.  The English text reads:

November 5th, 1943 Allied Forces disembarked in Salerno to reach “Monte Camino”

and “Monte La Difensa” hills. The aim was to defeat and cross the Winter Line made up by German forward Cassino.

The 56thEnglish Division were engaged to conquer both mountains but they were

Stopped near Monte Camino’s slope and consequently the 7thRegiment of the 3rdInfantry Division US Army helped them.  Offensive’s guidelines started in Caspoli and

Casale districts.

The 7thRegiment of the 3rdInfantry Division US Army were engaged in the battle until

November the 12th. All attempts to defeat both mountains failed miserably with several losses that were later removed with stretchers from the steep slope to an old church in the valley floor.  The soldier Floyd Lindstrom of the 7thRegiment of the 3rdInfantry Division US Army, Company H, fought in this battle, which he received the Medal Of Honor for his courage and virtue.

During the 75thanniversary of the battle the “Veteran Association of the 3rdInfantry Division US Army” and the associations joined together to honour and remember the price paid for freedom.  We set up this plaque in the slope next to the church

that hosted all soldier’s bodies.
