Monument Text:

17th Airborne Division

In memory of the paratroopers and glidermen of

the 17th Airborne Division who participated in

Operation Varsity on 24 March 1945.

Hamminkeln and the area around Wesel were liberated from Nazi

oppression through the combined actions of British and US

Airborne forces linking up with ground forces crossing the Rhine.

Thus began over 70 years of peace and friendship between these critical NATO allies.

Zur Erinnerung an die Fallschirmjäger und

Luftlandetruppen der 17. Luftlandedivision, die am

Bodentruppen vom nationalsozialistischen Regime befreit.
