457th Bomb Group Monument

<< Back to Conington Church

Details:

In the churchyard at the back of the church.

Monument

A rectangular stone block pedestal surmounted by a curved bust of an American airman in flying gear. The pedestal is mounted on a pavement with raised curb. There is a wreath in relief on the top of the front face of the pedestal and badge of the 8th Air Force carved in relief on the right side of the pedestal. On the back side is an inscribed name of the bomber group with a carved plane on the top. The dedication message is inscribed in English text, incised in black lettering below the carved wreath on the front side. It commemorates the heroism shown by the airmen of the 457th Bomb Group for England’s freedom in World War II.

Officers and enlisted men of the 457th Bomb group were stationed at RAF Glatton, the wartime name for Conington Airfield where B17 Flying Fortress aircraft flew from, to complete bombing missions over France and Germany in WW2 as part of the Eighth Air Force Allied Forces in Europe.
