USAAF STATION 134

Eye Aerodrome, Suffolk

1942 - 1945

To honour and forever remember the American Servicemen of the

490th Bombardment Group (Heavy), United States Eighth Army Air Force,

who stood and fought alongside Great Britain in its darkest hours.

From this WWII Aerodrome built upon requisitioned farmland and

constructed by the US 827th, 829th & 859th Engineer Aviation Battalions,

B-24 liberator and B-17 Flying Fortress bombers flew 158 daylight combat

missions until 'Victory in Europe' was declared on 8th May 1945.

Countless life-long friendships were forged between the young Americans far from

home and the local community who welcomed the Servicemen into these Parishes.

This memorial is dedicated as a lasting tribute to the 490th Bomb Group and its

many supporting units who once knew this rural corner of England as their home.
