The 'Counting The Cost' Memorial

<< Back to Duxford

Details:

Lined at the ramped walkway leading to the main entrance.

Monument

'Counting the Cost' is made up of 52 glass panels, engraved with silhouettes of over 7,000 American aircraft that were lost during operations. The panels are formed into two segments, 43 panels on the left and 9 panels on the right; the ramped walkway is in between. The memorial is a tribute to the 30,000 American airmen who lost their lives serving from UK bases during the Second World War. The glass panels represent the U. S. aircrafts which were lost in the war (8th Army Air Force: 6346 aircrafts; 9th Army Air Force: 692; U.S. Navy: 24). 4 metals frames (2 on each segment) contain the same message inscriptions.
