Isolated Burial

A standard French Military grave marker; a white cross with an inscribed centerpiece.

Wilfred Michaud was from Michigan and was of Canadian ancestry.  He served with the 1st Regiment of March of the French Foreign Legion.

He fell while fighting on the Somme on July 5, 1916, just days after the offensive began.

From American fighters in the Foreign legion, 1914-1918 by Paul Ayres Rockwell

Michaud was cited as a 'good and energetic soldier, who fell gloriously on July 4, 1916, as he threw himself forward in the assault of the German position,' and was mentioned honorably in an Order of the Day.
