2Lt Robert J. Kenning Memorial

<< Back to Brondum

Details:

On the west side of the road.

Marker

A rough-hewn stone engraved with a simple inscription written in Danish. A small flower bed is in front of the memorial. This memorial stone is erected here between Brøndum and Næsborg near the crash site. This was erected by the Danish government in 1995.

On January 5, 1944, while escorting bombers on a raid on German facilities at Kiel, Germany, his flight noted a lone German fighter approaching the bomber formation. As they watched, they were engaged by a number of enemy fighters. Lt Kenning dove to attack one, but was never seen again. German records state that he was shot down by Oberleutnant Rudolf Szardenings piloting a JU-88C night fighter. Lt Kenning was never seen to bail out, and the aircraft crashed near Logstor, approximately 43 miles Southwest of Frederickshaven, Denmark.
