A Philippine National Historic Marker.

 

The marker remembers the Leyte XXIV Corps Landing at Dulag by the 7th “Bayonet” Infantry Division on Yellow and Violet Beaches and the 96th “Deadeye” landings at Blue and Orange Beaches on October 20, 1944.

 

Major General John R. Hodge commanded the XXIV Corps during this operation.

The text on the plague is written in the Philippine language and reads:


Dumaong sa dalampasigan ng bayang ito ang US 24th Corps, sa ilalim ni Maj. Gen. John R. Hodge, 20 Oktubre 1944, kasabay ng pagdaong sa Palo, Leyte ng 10 Corps bilang unang hakbang ng mga Amerikano sa pagbawi ng Pilipinas mula sa mga pwersang Hapones. Sa tulong ng mga gerilya ng 9 Military District sa pamumuno ni Col. Ruperto Kangleon, nabawi ang Dulag Airstrip. Nasagip ang limang daang sibilyan sa Lambak ng Leyte, at muling nabuksan ang San Juanico at Panaon Straits.

 

Translation:

 

The US 24th Corps landed on the shores of this town, under Maj. Gen. John R. Hodge, October 20, 1944, in conjunction with the landing in Palo, Leyte of the 10th Corps as the first step of the Americans in the recovery of the Philippines from Japanese forces. With the help of the guerrillas of the 9th Military District led by Col. Ruperto Kangleon, recovered the Dulag Airstrip. Five hundred civilians were rescued in the Leyte Valley, and the San Juanico and Panaon Straits were reopened.
