Private Raymond Opsommer was born in Deinze, Belgium in 1891. He immigrated to the US in the early 1900s and settled in the Detroit, Michigan area. During World War 1 he enlisted and served in the 113th Infantry Regiment of the 33rd Infantry Division. The 113th Regiment, upon arriving in France, was assigned to train in the British sector in the Somme. Private Opsommer was killed in action during the Battle of Amiens on August 12, 1918.
After the war his family requested that he be reburied in his hometown in Belgium in the Deinze Community Cemetery,
