First Lieutenant Alexander Ramsey Nininger was a West Point Graduate Class of 1941. He was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion of the 57th Infantry Regiment, Philippine Scouts (US Army). During the Battle or Bataan (1942), in January 1942, 1LT Nininger was killed leading his troops against the advancing enemy. He was buried in a ceremony at St. Dominic’s Church in Abucay, and later listed as Missing in Action.
For his actions, Nininger was awarded the first Medal of Honor during the Second World War.
An award for valor at West Point, "The Alexander Nininger for Valor at Arms" is named in his honor.
Nininger is listed on the Manila Cemetery and Memorial Wall of the Missing. A cenotaph also remembers him at Arlington National Cemetery (Section MK-139). An interest in locating his remains continues.
