Isolated Burial
The memorial is an Isolated Burial (ISOB) of Lieutenant (Podporucznik) Richard Kresge Tice who was from Allentown, Pennsylvania and served with the 1st (Polish) Independent Airborne Brigade during WW2. He was killed during the Battle of Arnhem in Operation Market Garden in September 1944.
On September 21, 1944. Tice and his men parachuted from a Dakota with chalk number 62, near the village of Driel, not far from Arnhem. The Poles descended into heavy enemy fire; he was killed the next day defending the town of Driel. The 1st (Polish) Independent Airborne Brigade had parachuted in with mission of supporting elements of the British 1st Airborne Division. The British had become trapped during their attempt to capture the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem—the famed "Bridge Too Far." The battle for the bridge lasted nine days, resulting in many casualties for the British and for the Poles.
2nd Lt. Tice was posthumously awarded the Virtuti Militari, Polish medal.
