17th Airborne Division Glider Memorial

Details:

The memorial is located in the northern side of the Peace Garden which can be accessed near the southern, main entrance to the park.  Monument The memorial consists of a red metal plaque with white embossed lettering in English. It is framed by a red brick base and features unit insignia and names of 31 American soldiers of the 194th Glider Infantry Regiment and 2 pilots of the 88th Troop Carrier Squadron killed on site when a Horsa glider crashed on 12 December 1944. The memorial was inaugurated by the 17th Airborne Division Association on 12 December 1994 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the crash.

17th Airborne Division

1943 - 1945

In memory of the 31 patriotic American glidertroopers of the 194th Glider Infantry Regiment and two glider pilots of the 88th Troop Carrier Squadron who lost their lives in a tragic glider crash at Greenham Common December 12th 1944. Dedicated by the 117th Airborne Division Association December 12th 1944.
