Monument Text:

TO NOT FORGET

Thursday, September 16, 1943, early afternoon, an American squadron comprising 131 bombers escorted by 79 fighters progressed towards Nantes for a bombing mission of the port, the station and the airfield.

Seven aircraft were to be shot down including one in Champeaux near Vitré and three in Moyen Vilaine in Ercé-en-La Mée, Messac and Sainte-Anne-sur-Vilaine.

Each crew consists of 10 men. Of these 40 young aviators, 11 will be killed in action, 11 will be captured by the Germans very shortly after their landing and 5 later. With the help of the population and the Resistance, the 13 others will succeed in reaching England.

The B17F Boeing n ° 42-29901 piloted by Walter Euwer crashes in flames, here, south of the village of Tertre, at the bottom of the "Fernand" field.

The radio, Samuel Blatchford, an Apache Indian from Arizona, the youngest of the whole squad, he is only 19 years old, manages to jump northwest of La Mélais. Seriously injured in the back and in the foot by a rocket and bullets, he was taken in by Jean-Baptiste Rabu and P. P., alias "Paul-Henri Le Breton", a young refractory S.T.O from Messac.

Three others manage to jump, the machine gunners Alfred Held, Elmer Schroeder and Cyril Koval and are hidden by the inhabitants. The rest of the crew perished in the aircraft.

Through Marie Moquet and Quentin Bocherel, the 4 survivors were transferred to the other bank of the Vilaine, to a fisherman's hut belonging to Marcel Leblanc, a member of the F.N. / F.T.P. by Redon. A fifth, Jack Belstein, fallen in Pléchâtel from another plane, the "EL Diablo", is brought to the cabin.

Blatchford, Held and Schroeder will be evacuated by Gaston Sébilleau to Lizio where they will stay for 2 months assisted by the Busson and René Jouanguy couple. They will be arrested in Paris on Christmas Eve 1943. Blatchford will be very severely tortured by the Gestapo, first in Fresnes then in Germany before being deported to Krems in Austria where he will find his two comrades. Samuel Blatchford is according to the American press the most decorated Indian in the United States.

Evacuated to Pipriac then Paramé and the Dinan-Ploërmel sector, Koval and Belstein managed to reach England via Spain during the winter of 1943-1944.

This bombardment of the city of Nantes, in which these four aircraft did not take part since they were shot down before, will cause many victims: 812 dead, 1,785 wounded, more than 10,000 victims; 500 buildings will be destroyed and as many seriously damaged. Nantes will undergo a new attack on the following September 23.
