Fallen Bombers in Médoc Monument

<< Back to Carcans

Details:

On the north side of the road.

Monument

A memorial wall bearing three metal plaques. The center plaque contains the commemoration message and the list of info about the 10 American bombers. The left-most plaque is a printed image of a B-17 Flying Fortress while the right-most is a B-24 Liberator. To the right of the monument are two information boards which also contain a list of info and a map of the crash. There are inconsistencies between the info board and the center plaque specifically on points 3, 5, 8. Also, the dates of the crash on the info board for points 1, 2, and 3 are different on the plaque (December 31 vs November 31). The type of aircraft inscribed also conflicts but the inscription on the plaque is more accurate than on the board except for the “Harmful Lil’ Armful” which should be a B-24.

The Germans have turned the northern tip of the Medoc into a fortress to protect their shipping and submarine bases at Bordeaux. These bombers were to destroy those bases the day they were shot down.
