The memorial remembers 2LT George Franklin Wilson who killed in action on December 16, 1944. He was piloting the P-51 (43-24898) 'Mildred' on a bomber escort mission departing from San Severo, Italy. On the return flight his plane crashed just north of this memorial. He served with the 308th Fighter Squadron, 31st Fighter Group of the 15th Air Force.
