Pleudihen was liberated by the 15th Cavalry Group. Many american
soldiers died to liberate France. Four of them were killed in Pleudihen.
The 15th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized landed on UTAH beach on July 4th and July 5th 1944. Made up of 449 vehicles, it was part of the Task Force A (T.F.A) whose mission was to liberate Brest (29) passing through Dinan (22).
On Thursday, 3rd August 1944, the T.F.A infiltrated the surrounding forest of Mesnil in Miniac-Morvan (35). They were attacked in Val-Hervelin in Pleudihen and First Lieutenant Leo A. MOORE Junior, from Massachussets, was killed at the front of his section. The village was liberated that evening.
The American forces that liberated Val-Hervelin the day before, entered the village of Pleudihen very early in the morning on August 4th. They were welcomed by the Mayor and the Resistance. They moved swiftly to Doslet, but were stopped at Pont-de-Cleux because the road was cut off.
An armoured convoy heading to Châteauneuf-d'Ille-et-Vilaine (35), passed through Doslet in Pleudihen at 8.30 am where a battle broke out with a group of german soldiers. During the fight, Hollis BANKSTON, from Louisiana, and Ivan MAY were killed. Radio Operator William Mac CULLOUGH and Gunner James HANSON were seriously injured. They managed to get out of the tank in flames, rescued by a german soldier and local people nearby. Taken prisoner by the germans and treated by Dr. René JAMBON from Châteauneuf, they were taken to hospital in Saint-Servan-sur-Mer (35). William Mac CULLOUGH died on the way to hospital. lames HANSON was evacuated with other American prisoners and was liberated on May 9th 1945 during the unconditional surrender of the German Army.
On Saturday, August Sth, Châteauneuf was finally liberated when the american artillery was deployed for several days in both Miniac and Pleudihen in order to neutralize the Saint-Malo garrison which was made of 10 000 men.
