Le stratège

Le chef de la 3ème Armée américaine est un personnage haut en couleurs. Voici un extrait de sa première conférence d'état-major, illustrant parfaitement ce qu'il pense des «stratèges en chambre». « Ne vous inquiétez pas de vos flancs. Nous devons les protéger, d'accord ; mais pas au point de ne plus faire autre chose. Un gros crétin a dit un jour que les flancs devaient être protégés ; et depuis lors, tous les pauvres imbéciles du monde n'ont plus pensé qu'à se protéger les flancs. Nous ne voulons pas de ça dans la 3éme Armée. C'est à l'ennemi de s'inquiéter de ses arrières. Et je ne veux pas non plus de message dans le genre : « Je tiens ma position « !! Nous ne tenons rien du tout ! Nous avançons constamment et nous ne nous occupons pas de tenir quoi que ce soit, à part l'ennemi !! Celui-là, nous allons le tenir, et lui ruer dans les fesses sans désemparer !!! »

The chief of the Third Army was a colourful character. Here is an extract of General Patton's first headquarters conference with his officers of the Third Army, illustrating his disdain for armchair strategists.

« Forget this Goddamn business of worrying about our flanks. We must guard our flanks, but not to the extent that we don't do anything else. Some goddamned fool once said that flanks must be secure and since then sons of bitches all over the world have been going crazy guarding their flanks. We don't want any of that in the Third Army! Flanks are something for the enemy to worry about, not us! Also, I don't want to get any messages saying, 'I'm holding my position!'   We're not holding anything. We are advancing constantly and not interested in holding anything ! Except the enemy. We're going to twist their nuts and kick the hell out of them all the time. »
