Monument en hommage de l'équipage du

bombardier américain B-17 victime d'un

crash au retour de mission, provoquant la

mort de ces 11 soldats le 29 mai 1943.

« C'était le samedi 29 mai 1943, il était en-

viron 16 heures, le temps était chaud, nous

nous apprêtions à retourner aux champs,

quand soudain dans un énorme gronde-

ment, nous vîmes des dizaines d'appareils

volants en formation, tel un essaim

d'abeilles. Tout à coup, l'un de ces grands

oiseaux touché par la mitraille explosa en

plein ciel comme un épouvantail. Tandis

que l'avant en feu piquait vers le sol dans

un épais nuage de fumée, la carlingue tel

un énorme cigare tournoyait et culbutait

plus lentement dans le ciel azuré.

Sur les onze membres de cet équipage, un

seul eut la vie sauve grâce à la chance ma-

térialisée par sa corolle blanche de son pa-

rachute qui termina sa course dans les

branches d'un chêne. Deux ou trois corps

affreusement brulés gisaient là dans ce

champs parmi le foin tout fraîchement

coupé, cinq ou six autres semblaient dor-

mir un peu plus loin dans leur lit d'acier,

les derniers étant dispersés ici et là. »

Notre commune garde à jamais le souvenir

d'un grand gâchis humain.

English translation:

Monument in honor of the crew of the American B-17 bomber which crashed on its way back from a mission, causing the death of these 11 soldiers on May 29, 1943.

It was Saturday, May 29, 1943, it was about 4 p.m., the weather was warm, we were getting ready to go back to the fields, when suddenly, with a huge roar, we saw dozens of flying aircraft in formation, like a swarm of bees.

Suddenly, one of these large birds hit by the machine gun exploded in mid-air like a scarecrow. While the burning front part of the plane plunged to the ground in a thick cloud of smoke, the cabin, like a huge cigar, spun and tumbled more slowly in the blue sky.

Out of the eleven members of this crew, only one had his life saved thanks to the luck materialized by the white corolla of his parachute which ended its race in the branches of an oak tree. Two or three horribly burned bodies lay there in the field among the freshly cut hay, five or six others seemed to be sleeping a little further away in their steel bed, the last ones being scattered here and there.

Our commune will always remember a great human loss.
