Archibald Allen McPheeters was born on January 1, 1918, in Rice, Minnesota. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1940 shortly after graduating from A&M College. As a battalion commander in the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Capt. McPheeters participated in two combat jumps (Normandy and The Netherlands) before continuing on to Belgium where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Silver Star after ordering his men to take cover and leading a singlehanded charge, armed only with a pistol, against a German patrol. His men, although outnumbered, quickly followed and succeeded in capturing an important position close to Groesbeck, The Netherlands. McPheeters was killed during the battle for the town of Fosse, Belgium.
