When Richard Harwood Wingate was born on December 22, 1888, in Lyons, Indiana, his father, Richard, was 29 and his mother, Mary, was 23. He had two brothers and one sister. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company M, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on July 21, 1918 (at the age of 29) in France and is now buried in Prairie Chapel Cemetery, Lyons, Greene County, Indiana, USA.
