When Robert King Mayfield was born in 1891, his father, William, was 32 and his mother, Ida, was 25. He had two brothers and four sisters. He entered the military service in Illinois and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company B, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 9, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. He is listed on his parents' tombstone in the Slater City Cemetery, Slater City, Saline County, Missouri.
