James Riley Proffitt was born on April 20, 1888, in Nelson, Virginia. He married Ruth Earle Chandler on March 24, 1918, in Louisa, Virginia. They had one child during their marriage. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company C, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 8, 1918 (at the age of 30) in Argonne Forest, France and is now buried in Trinity Baptist Church Cemetery, Mineral, Louisa County, Virginia, USA.
