Dempsey T. Bates was born in 1894 in Sesser, Franklin County, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company E, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 9, 1918 but his current burial place is unknown. The American Legion Bates Post No. 560 in Sesser was named for Pvt. Dempsey T. Bates, a great-grandson of James and Angeline (Beasley) Lewis.
