When Charles A. Black was born on October 21, 1892, his father, James, was 28 and his mother, Margaret, was 25. He had three sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company B, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action in 1918 and is now buried in Allegheny Church Cemetery, Butler County, Pennsylvania, USA.
