Lavern J. Thompson was born on July 6, 1898 in Cavalier. He was the son of Mrs. Maud Thompson. He enlisted in the army in Co. C., 1st North Dakota Regiment at Grafton, North Dakota and sailed for France on December 13, 1917. Upon arrival in France along with other members of his company, he was transferred to Company E, 18th Infantry, 1st Division as a Private. A few weeks after his transfer, his new organization moved to the front. He participated in the Cantigny, Soissons and St. Mihiel engagements and was killed on the first day his company went into action in the Argonne Woods on October 4, 1918 at the age of 20. He is now buried in Cavalier Cemetery, Cavalier, Pembina County, North Dakota, USA. The unit that is inscribed in his headstone is 16th Inf (which could be a mistake). The American Legion Post #11 in Cavalier, North Dakota is named after him.
