Leo Christ Schmersal was born on March 3, 1895 in Delphos, Van Wert County, Ohio. His father was John Gerhard and his mother was Emma Hugel Schmersal. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company F, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action in 1918 and is now buried in Gethsemani Cemetery, Lima, Allen County, Ohio, USA. His headstone was mis-inscribed as 13 INF for his unit.
