When Henry C. Buuck was born on April 20, 1896, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, his father, Wilhelm, was 49 and his mother, Louise, was 44. He was a member of the Emmaus Lutheran Church. He enlisted at Cleveland, Ohio in September 1917 and went overseas several months after. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company B, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He had been in France approximately a year before being Killed in Action on October 7, 1918 on the western battle front. He is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Bunck.
