When Axel Leander was born on February 5, 1895, in Stockaryd, Jönköping, Sweden, his father, Georg, was 47 and his, mother, Emma, was 46. He was 22 years old when he registered for the World War I draft. He entered the military service in North Dakota and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company C, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on October 8, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France and ranked as a Private.
