When Grover Cleveland Mahan was born on March 14, 1891, in Pontotoc, Mississippi, his father, John, was 34 and his mother, Kate, was 19. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company H, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 11, 1918 at the age of 27 and is now buried in Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery, Lafayette County, Mississippi, USA. His name is also listed on the Union County War Memorial located on the Court House Lawn, New Albany, Union County, Mississippi.
