Michael Herbert “Mike” Landis was born on February 7, 1894 in Jennings County, Indiana. He was the son of James and Adelia Landis. He moved with his parents to Westport, Decatur County when quite young. He was employed to Firestone Tire Company, Akron, Ohio before enlisting. He entered the service on May 29, 1918. He was sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio then overseas. He was assigned to Company K, 26th Infantry, 1st Division and participated in St. Mihiel Drive and battle of Argonne Forest. He was Killed in Action on October 5, 1918 at the age of 24 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
