When Inman Gillen was born on October 4, 1894, his father, David, was 42 and his mother, Mary, was 38. He entered the service on September, 22, 1917 in Bedford, Indiana and was sent for training to Camp Taylor, Kentucky and then transferred to Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He was assigned to Company K, 151st Infantry and then was transferred to Headquarters Company, 162nd Infantry and later to Headquarters Company, 26th Infantry Division. He was promoted to Private First Class on December 11, 1917. He was deployed overseas on June 11, 1918. He was killed in action October 4, 1918 at Meuse-Argonne. In the narrative for the Silver Star Citation he was cited for gallantry in action and especially meritorious services.
