When Thomas Dexter Curfman was born on August 21, 1892, in Steubenville, Ohio, his father, George, was 35 and his mother, Catherine, was 35. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant in Company G, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 7, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. He also has a memorial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Corfman. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

Near Exermont, France 4 October 1918: " When the advance of his company was retarded by machine-gun fire he took an automatic rifle from a wounded gunner and went forward alone to a position from which he opened fire and destroyed the enemy nest. He was himself mortally wounded."
