Charles Gunthner was born in May 1874 in California. He had one son and two daughters with Carrie A. Hoffman between 1887 and 1898. he entered the military service in New York and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company G, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 6, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Gunther.
