When Joseph John Marckx was born on October 12, 1895, in Chicago, Illinois, his father, Joannes, was 35 and his mother, Joanna, was 28. He had one brother and three sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in HQ Company, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He died from his wounds received in battle on October 7, 1918 but his current burial place is unknown. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Marcks.
