When Cleo E. Nebergall was born on October 26, 1894, in Oblong, Illinois, his father, Jacob, was 26 and his mother, Sarah, was 21. He had four brothers and three sisters. He was employed as a coal miner, near Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana, when he enlisted in the U.S. Regular Army on May 18, 1917. Cleo was sent to Jefferson Barracks, Missouri for training and then assigned to Battery A, 5th Artillery. The 5th Artillery embarked overseas on 30 Jul 1918. He participated in the battles at Montdidier, Soissons, Saint-Mihiel and Argonne Forest (Meuse-Argonne Offensive). PVT Cleo Nebergall was severely wounded in battle and passed away on October 5, 1918. He is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
