When Knox Freeman Thompson was born on April 24, 1893, in Georgia, his father, Samuel, was 31 and his mother, Julia, was 20. He had three brothers and four sisters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Ordnance Detachment, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Division. He was Killed in Action on November 1, 1918 and is now buried in Myrtle Hill Cemetery, Hogansville, Troup County, Georgia, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monuments in Wadelincours and in Saint-Juvin, France but his name there is inscribed as F K Freeman.
