When Hanson L Vollmer was born on May 16, 1892, his father, Paul, was 56 and his mother, Katie, was 21. He had one brother and three sisters. On October 13, 1911, at the age of 19, Hanson enlisted into the Army in Columbus, Ohio for a three year term. Upon his honorable discharge October 12, 1914, he was re-enlisted for a second term on October 13, 1914. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Sergeant in Battery A, 6th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Division. He was Killed in Action on October 28, 1918 at the age of 26 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Vallmer.
