When Carl J. Connell was born on April 4, 1899, his father, John, was 29 and his mother, Martha, was 31. He had one brother and four sisters. He entered the military service in Pennsylvania and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private First Class in Company A, 1st Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 4, 1918 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France and ranked as a Private.
