Clifford Winchell Kinkead was born on September 20, 1898. He was the son of John and Fannie Kinkead. He had two sisters and three brothers. He enlisted on May 2nd, 1917 in the regular army. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Corporal in Company B, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He saw active service for a period of one year, five months, and twelve days on the front lines and on October 4, 1918 and received severe wounds in the face and shoulder. On October 7th, he was taken to the base hospital where he died on October 28, 1918 from bronchial pneumonia, a result of his weakened condition. He is now buried in Rippey Cemetery, Rippey, Greene County, Iowa, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Kinhead.
