Fred L. Schimetschek served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private cin Company C, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He was sent to France in December 1917. He was Killed in Action on October 7, 1918 in the Argonne Forest and is now buried in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Colma, San Mateo County, California, USA. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Schiemetschek.
